Personal development, health and physical education

Personal development, health and physical education (PDHPE) is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.

According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), students are expected to participate in PDHPE for between 1.5 and 2.5 hours per week in Kindergarten to Year 6.

PDHPE provides students with opportunities to explore issues that are likely to impact on the health, safety and wellbeing of themselves and others – now and in the future. Students also participate in challenging and enjoyable physical activity, improving their capacity to move with skill and confidence.

Physical education is part of one of the six key learning areas in the NSW primary curriculum. The following programs are incorporated in the Years 3 to 6 school sport program throughout the year.

Games and sports

This strand develops each student's competence and confidence in a broad range of games, sports and physical activities. Students develop fundamental movement skills (FMS), progressing to more games-and sports-specific skills in non-competitive and competitive environments that foster positive feelings of success and enjoyment.

Gymnastics

The focus of this strand is on initial movement exploration leading to the acquisition of some preliminary gymnastics skills. Students investigate and succeed in a wide variety of movement experiences and challenges, developing skill, demonstrating control and exploring the ways in which the body can move. The gymnastics experiences recommended in this syllabus are appropriate for all students. They do not involve olympic or competitive gymnastics disciplines.

Dance

Dance develops the ability of students to communicate and express themselves through movement. Through dance, students develop awareness of the ways their bodies’ move, the space in which they move, the time and quality of their movements and their relationship to each other and objects. Students participate in composing, moving and appreciating a range of dance styles.

Friday sport

Students participate in a range of sport programs on a Friday afternoon. These sports are chosen with the aim of developing locomotor and manipulative skills such as throwing, catching, striking and kicking. Choices may vary according to the season and availability of resources.

Primary School Sports Association

During Terms 2 and 3 students have the opportunity to participate in netball, soccer and Australian football league (AFL). Students who are chosen to play in a primary school sports association (PSSA) team, leave school at 12:15pm on a Friday to play against other schools in the zone.

Carnivals

3 to 6 swimming carnival (including 8 year olds from Year 2). This carnival is held early in the term at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre.

3 to 6 cross country carnival (including 8 year olds from Year 2). This carnival is held at Tunks Park, Cammeray.

3 to 6 athletics carnival (including 8 year olds from Year 2). This track and field carnival is held at E S Marks Athletics Field, Kensington. Following school carnivals, a Cammeray team is chosen to compete at a Zone level.
